Databricks consulting from source records to usable reporting
A data platform earns its place when teams can use the information it produces. That requires more than loading files or connecting a dashboard. The source records, transformation rules, access and business definitions need to work together.
FI Digital helps US organizations scope Databricks data preparation and reporting requirements.
We begin with a defined workload, identify the data and decisions it supports, and establish the checks needed before business users rely on the output.
Start with a workload that has an owner
A useful first workload might consolidate an operational report, prepare a dataset for relationship managers or replace a fragile sequence of manual extracts. Identify the owner, source systems, refresh requirement and acceptance measures before expanding the platform design.
For an existing environment, begin with the failure or limitation: incomplete datasets, inconsistent measures, access problems or a pipeline that is difficult to maintain. The assessment should distinguish a platform configuration issue from a problem in the source data or business rule.
A practical data delivery scope
Define the records, identifiers, update patterns and access needed from each source. Plan for missing files, late records and changed source structures. Capture enough context to investigate an incomplete load.
Organize data so raw records, validated information and business-ready datasets have clear purposes. Where a layered architecture is useful, each layer should have defined acceptance checks rather than become another unexplained copy of the data.
Assess the applicable Databricks governance capabilities and the permissions needed by engineers, reporting users and downstream tools. Access and ownership should follow the actual operating model.
Define the datasets and measures that a reporting tool will consume, including refresh behavior and reconciliation. A connection to Power BI or another tool is only part of the work; the information still needs agreed meaning.

Experience with relationship-manager dashboards
In an anonymous wealth-management engagement, our group used Databricks to deliver four relationship-manager dashboards over approximately six weeks. The dashboards covered redemptions, net asset value, portfolio movement, total investments and maturing investments.
The client name remains confidential. No quantified business improvement or return was supplied, so none is claimed here. The example describes delivered reporting scope and duration, not a US client engagement or a promise about the timing of your project.
Reconciliation belongs in the design
Choose representative records with the business owner and trace them through the pipeline. Check key totals, identifiers, missing values and treatment of adjustments. Where reporting depends on a point-in-time position, agree the relevant date and refresh cutoff.
Also test a failed run and the recovery route. Reprocessing should not silently duplicate records or change the meaning of a previously published measure. Document how the team detects incomplete data and decides when a dataset is ready for use.
Keep platform cost and ownership visible
Confirm the environment, services, workload behavior and operating requirements before estimating the platform cost. Implementation fees and consumption or subscription costs are separate. The architecture should reflect the expected workload and the capability of the team that will operate it.
The handover can include agreed mappings, transformations, access arrangements, validation evidence and operating notes. Ongoing monitoring, enhancements and support need a defined owner and engagement scope.
Bring one dataset or reporting problem
Tell us what the users need to understand, where the source data lives and what prevents the current process from working. Include any existing Databricks environment, reporting tools and important constraints. We can then define an assessment or implementation scope with useful acceptance criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Is this service for a new Databricks environment or an existing one?
Either can be assessed. A new workload needs clear source, governance and operating requirements before design. An existing environment may need help with data preparation, reporting consistency or a specific failure. We identify the actual problem first so the engagement does not default to rebuilding work that can be retained.
What does a Databricks implementation include?
The proposal defines the actual scope. It may include source assessment, ingestion, transformations, validated datasets, access arrangements and downstream reporting. Business acceptance and operating responsibilities are part of the plan. Cloud setup, platform costs, advanced workloads and ongoing support are not assumed to be included without an explicit agreement.
Do we have to use bronze, silver and gold layers?
A layered approach can distinguish raw data, validated records and business-ready outputs. It is a design pattern rather than a reason to create unnecessary copies. The structure should fit your sources, consumers and recovery needs, with a clear purpose and validation responsibility for each stage used in the implementation.
Can Databricks feed Power BI reports?
Yes, Databricks documents supported Power BI connection options. The appropriate setup depends on authentication, the environment and how reports consume the data. We also assess model definitions, access and refresh behavior. Connecting the tools does not by itself establish consistent measures or appropriate permissions for every report user.
Can you migrate an existing ETL process?
We can assess its sources, transformations, dependencies and reconciliation requirements. A migration needs to preserve the business meaning of the output, including exceptions and adjustments. The proposal should identify what will be transferred, redesigned or retired, and how the replacement will be compared with the existing process before cutover.
How do you validate financial or portfolio reporting?
Work with the responsible business owners to agree definitions, dates and representative records, then reconcile the output against approved sources. Late transactions, corrections and incomplete feeds need explicit treatment. Our role is implementation and data preparation; investment judgments and the approval of financial interpretation remain with the appropriately responsible people.
How can we assess relevant delivery experience?
Ask for the problem, the delivered scope and the evidence available for the proposed team. The anonymous wealth-management example on this page describes four dashboards and an approximate delivery period. It does not disclose a client name or quantified improvement. Procurement requirements for formal credentials should be checked separately against current documentation.
What should we prepare for the first discussion?
Describe the workload, source systems, current platform, report consumers and the main failure or limitation. Include refresh expectations and any relevant data-access constraints. Initial examples should be appropriate to share. This information helps define an assessment without requesting broad production access before purpose, permissions and responsibilities are agreed.
